Some publicity in October Nene Valley Living Magazine

'China Plates' Notebook and Phone Case
There's a wee bit of blurb about my paintings and related phone cases, notepads and other products  in the October issue of Nene Valley Living, on page 19. Editor Fiona Cumberpatch has one of my 'China Plates' iPhone covers so can flaunt it everywhere she goes! Thanks Fiona!

Garden flowers

I'm pleased I managed to finish this small oil this afternoon....the sun was shining and my very small Aster bush was just asking to be painted. I can't seem to encourage it to grow any larger than 12" height, maybe I have a dwarf version! I've seen great swaying bushes of glorious purple asters in people's gardens, so it must be possible for it to grow a decent size....either that or I'll just have to live with 'Aster envy".

This is a work in progress still; I was painting wet-on-wet with oils so will wait for it to dry before I finish it off!

Sky Blue Butterfly Panel & Red Sari Scroll: Works in progress

This small panel was just finished today! It needs a few weeks to dry completely before I pour on the final coat of resin. I've used elements from a much larger panel from a few years ago, and think it works better as a more condensed image. I started this during Open studios and as always the drying time in between layers means it will be ready around October...

Mixed Media panel
(Thai paper, oil paint, oil pastel, enamel paint)

This is my current work in progress, a very long scroll, similar to the 'Entwined' scroll of a few years ago. It's a bit of a nightmare to work on as most of my long boards are in storage, hence the new technique of not cutting it off the paper before I attach it to a support board. Also need to make sure it does not twist! The inspiration for this Scroll is from one of my friend's saris, I can never get enough of deep crimson. Probably something to do with lower light levels in winter...

Emerald Fusion Sari Panel & Dreaming Peacock panel in Art in the Heart

I have managed to get down to work again after a really busy summer and have completed this small panel, thankfully thinking of a slightly more inspiring title than 'Green and Lilac Sari Panel'....not very switched after a summer of fresh air and too much cake! I love the vibrance of this small piece, and if you get down to Art in The Heart Gallery in Peterborough, you should be able to view it fairly soon. This fab Gallery showcases high quality art from artists and artisans from the area, many of whom exhibit nationally and internationally.

'China Plates' was exhibited during 2014 Peterborough Artist's Open Studios and is now back in Art in the Heart. This is more of a 3D piece than a painting, this is a direction I would like to go in as it's technically a bit more challenging to resin a 3D surface than a flat one!

Dreaming Peacock is a rather large panel which took all winter to complete! I am now embarking on Winter 2015 project: a very long scroll painting....

New Sari Panels: Works in progress

This is a cheerful piece which I started during the PAOS event in Cathedral Square months ago, continued during the Open Studios weekends and is now nearly complete. As usual the process takes several months so each layer dries before another can be added. Just gives me more time to think......
This panel hasn't got a title yet, I need to think of something more original than 'green & lilac'....

Some more paint detail required in the central sections still, then a few months drying and then the resin stage to finish off.  Not a quick process by any means!

National Trust Ham House paintings

Ham House Embroidery 1
Thai paper, oil paint, oil pastel enamel paint and resin on board
H: 85cm x W: 50 cm
Detail: border

I have been working for a number of months on two pieces inspired by a trip to the National Trust's Ham House, on the River Thames. The first panel (Ham House Embroidery 1) is Thai paper on board and takes its motifs from a silk embroidered bed head cover from 1670/1680. The detail image of the border, above, is inspired from the incredibly intricate decoration from what is thought to be the State bed, and is composed of silk thread, wire, vellum and silk tassels. Much of the embroidery is silk floss and cord, embellished with soft silk tassels, all in warm cream and peach tones.

The second, larger piece which is a work in progress (Ham House Embroidery 2), is a paper on canvas work, which is a considerable size, hence the choice of a canvas structure as it is reasonably light weight compared to board!

A wonderful silk wall hanging was the starting point for this piece, and I have included a reference to the rich silk ruches that form a border to the hanging. The Thai paper which I have used as the base layer has dried flowers incorporated though out, and I have included these occasionally across the painting, integrating them across the surface of the work.

Summer drawing at Barnsdale Gardens & more

I have enjoyed using my large Moleskin sketchbook this summer, the paper takes ink and aquarel pencil really well, far better than standard watercolour.

It's that time of year again! I have realised I have not been able to blog at all for the past few months, due to domestic issues and studies, so this is my first for a while. Floral Panel Paintings inspired by Oxburgh Hall NT

Here is a new large scale panel painting inspired by drawings done in the National Trust's Oxburgh Hall,Norfolk. This warm brick moated Tudor mansion has intriguing 18th Century Spanish style leather wall coverings which have been embossed with rococo scrolls and floral images. In the 1850's, the daughter of the 6th Baronet  repainted the wall coverings and the result today is rich and vibrant .

Mary Queen of Scots Tapestry paintings: Oxburgh Hall

This very large paper on canvas piece is finally finished, along with two smaller 'fragment' pieces. I am currently completing the series with a further large 'fragment' painting of hand made paper which is more of an exploratory piece as a response to the feelings evoked by the original tapestries in Oxburgh Hall, rather than a study based on the actual designs within the tapestries, which these paintings represent.

China Plates

Detail from 'China Plates'
Work in progress
I've been having some fun with my hand made paper...making paper 'china plates' with designs inspired by some of the lovely pieces in the V& A Museum. I originally did some research in the china collection last year for my 'Yellow Chinese Robe' panel painting, and loved the china so much I decided to try a more 3-D approach to reflect shape and design. Some details from the 'Yellow Chinese Robe' panel are incorporated. The paper is moulded on actual plates; the resulting concave shapes will prove a challenge to coat evenly the resin process. If this succeeds then larger projects are already planned!

This is a smallish sized Fragment approx 12 " long,  and based on a Sari borrowed from a friend. This will be resined and backed as a small 'frameless Fragment'.

Art sales sponsor India project

Red Paradise Bird Fragment Open Studios sale
Just a little update on how sales of my sari inspired paintings have generated funds for Esther Homes Project, a charity based in India.
These are a few of the paintings which have sold over the past 18 months, 10% of proceeds (or 100% for 'Roma' which was auctioned for £250) have gone to support the work done in India by Esther Homes, which is an organisation providing homes, education, clothing and food for children and adults rescued from the sex trade. Some of these were commissions and some sales through galleries and Open Studios, approximately providing for 15 children for 1 month.
